HEAL has stepped up its level of participation in the efforts of the MedBiquitous Consortium, through formal membership in the organization. Founded by Johns Hopkins Medicine and leading professional medical societies, MedBiquitous is an international group of professional medical and healthcare associations, universities, commercial, and governmental organizations dedicated to advancing healthcare education through technology standards that promote professional competence, collaboration, and better patient care. MedBiquitous is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop information technology standards for healthcare education and competence assessment.
Some HEAL staff members have participated for over a year as "invited experts" in MedBiquitous. Formal membership in the Consortium will now give HEAL the opportunity to be more centrally involved in the activities of the organization, including the Working Groups that create new standards for use in medical education. HEAL is currently part of both the Learning Objects Working Group, which is creating a new Healthcare Learning Object Metadata (Healthcare LOM) standard, and the Virtual Patients Working Group.
